Planning support improves AI writing and takes time

Viktor Kewenig, Lev Tankelevitch, Sean Rintel, Advait Sarkar et al. · arXiv / Microsoft Research · 22 Oct 2026 · not peer-reviewed

Source finding

Goal-setting and task-breakdown support improved AI-assisted writing. The first task took 27.84 rather than 16.35 minutes on average. Participants rated the AI as less helpful.

Our interpretation

Ease, writing quality and time spent need separate assessment.

Method and evidence

Randomized online comparison of two writing interfaces. Quality was mainly AI-rated; humans additionally rated 107 essays.

Limitations and interests

Unreviewed Microsoft Research preprint. Moderate agreement between AI and human ratings. No workplace field test or evidence of lasting skills.

What businesses can do

Test goal-setting and task breakdown before the AI draft. Compare writing quality and total time instead of deciding on satisfaction alone.

Where to start
