More AI contributions need enough review time

Sam Boysel, Anni Lai · Linux Foundation Research · 20 Oct 2026 · not peer-reviewed

Source finding

59% of responding project maintainers report more incoming contributions due to generative AI. This question received 111 responses. The share is 69% for large projects; the study does not measure business productivity.

Our interpretation

More submissions are not yet progress. Businesses should check whether review and integration keep pace with the volume generated.

Method and evidence

Online survey fielded April–June 2026 through Linux Foundation and partner channels. 234 qualified respondents overall; 111 responses on contribution volume. Voluntary participation and self-report, not a causal test.

Limits and interests

Open-source context with limited transferability to businesses. No measured time savings or productivity impact. Red Hat sponsored the research; Futurewei, OpenSSF and LF AI & Data supported it. Not peer reviewed.

What businesses can do

Allocate time for review and integration when using AI-assisted development. Track queues, rework and post-release defects alongside contribution volume.
